Build the system. Check the pairing. Show it off.
We cross-check 18,000+ products against real audiophile systems, so you know what pairs before you buy: impedance, sensitivity, signal chain and price, all shown.
Two excellent components can fail to bring out the best in each other.
Neither box is at fault. What goes wrong sits between them, and it comes down to five numbers no spec sheet prints side by side.
Impedance. A 4-ohm speaker asks more current from an amplifier than an 8-ohm one. The amp rarely fails outright. It just turns hard and thin exactly when the music gets busy.
Sensitivity. An 84 dB speaker needs roughly eight times the power of a 93 dB one to play equally loud. Most tube amplifiers do not have it, and the spec sheet will not stop you.
Gain matching. A high-output source into a high-gain amplifier spends its entire useful range in the first eighth of the volume dial. Everything works; nothing is controllable.
The room. Below about 300 Hz the room has more say than the speaker does. The best loudspeaker in the wrong space is still the wrong loudspeaker.
Budget. Every one of the above is negotiable against the others, and against what you already own. The trade-offs are the real problem, not any single number.
None of this is secret. It is just scattered across manuals, measurements, forum threads and other people’s systems. We gather it in one place and check what can be checked: impedance, power against sensitivity, the signal chain, connections and digital formats.
Watch a full system come together
Two-minute walkthrough: add components, check compatibility, and share your build.
Four tools. One pairing-first platform.
Built by audiophiles, for audiophiles. Every tool assumes you care what the gear actually does.
System Builder
Design your system visually. Signal flow from source to speakers, with the pairing checked as you go.
AI System Analysis
Ask a chatbot and it answers from whatever it read. This reads your build's own specs, our compatibility checks and the pairings people actually assemble, then names what is holding the system back and which upgrade moves it most.
Real-System Data
Recommendations drawn from systems people have published, so you can see what experienced listeners put together rather than what a brochure suggests.
Fair Market Pricing
Researched new and used prices, refined by member submissions, so you know what gear really costs.
How it works
From exploration to a fully analysed system in minutes.
Recommendations built from real systems
Every suggestion is grounded in how audiophiles actually pair gear, not in generic specs.
What a pairing check can’t tell you.
Here is where the checks stop, and what stays your call.
What we can tell you
Whether the amp can drive the speaker
Impedance and sensitivity against rated output, with the headroom that leaves you.
Whether the signal chain is complete
Source through amplification to speakers, including the link a build is missing.
What people actually put together
Which components turn up together across published systems. The signal sharpens as more systems are added.
What it has been costing
Researched new and used prices, refined by member submissions.
What we can't
How it sounds
No spec sheet carries timbre, and neither do we. We can tell you a pairing will work; we cannot tell you it will move you.
Whether you will like it
Passing every check means nothing in the chain is working against anything else. That is a floor to build on. Whether the result is the system you want stays your call.
How your room sounds
Its dimensions do set the speaker sensitivity and amplifier power we recommend. But below roughly 300 Hz the acoustics have more say than the speakers do, and those we cannot hear from here.
Where our coverage runs thin
Vintage and boutique gear is patchier than the mainstream, and we do not currently mark which is which.
The numbers we show come from manufacturer specifications and published research, not from our own measurements. Where a spec is missing it is simply absent, rather than flagged.
